Here are the steps you need to follow to receive the benefits of a NY DMV-approved PIRP course:

If You Received a Traffic Ticket:

1. Contact the court handling your ticket to confirm you meet PIRP requirements. Eligibility is based on violation type and how much time has passed since your last course.
2. Enroll and complete a PIRP course through a provider approved by the NY Department of Motor Vehicles prior to your hearing date.
3. Obtain an official completion certificate from the provider upon finishing the course. Retain this as proof.
4. File the original completion certificate with the court before your scheduled hearing date per their instructions. 
5. Bring a copy of the certificate to present at your hearing to the judge/prosecutor.
6. Pay any remaining administrative fees or fines as legally required based on your case outcome.  
7. Verify any ticket charge reductions or license point adjustments with the court and NY DMV after the hearing.
8. If requirements are met, up to 4 points may be reduced from your license record. The ticket may also be reduced or dismissed.Give a copy of your certificate to your auto insurer to qualify for a potential premium discount, if eligible. Discounts vary.
